Product Description

A very nice condition 1745 George II Silver Lima Issue Shilling Coin.

The coin has the older portrait of George II engraved by John Tanner and surrounded by GEORGIUS II DEI GRATIA. LIMA. On the reverse, is the design by Johann Ochs, showing four crowned shields bearing the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brunswick and Luneburg, France, Scotland & England, and Ireland, and is dated 1745.

Lima coins of George II are some of the more sought-after pieces amongst collectors of British coinage. They were minted in 1745-46 using a large hoard of silver captured from the Spanish by Admiral Anson's squadron operating in the Pacific Ocean. The word "Lima" engraved under the bust is a reference to the fact that the Spanish silver was being shipped from Lima back to Spain when it was intercepted by Anson.
