Product Description

A beautiful original British 1811 Java Medal in silver, that was issued by the Honourable East India Company in 1812 in commemoration of the capture of Java from the Dutch in 1811.

The Medal was awarded to 750 British officers and men that took part as well as the Indian troops of the Honourable East India Company Army. It came in gold or silver, with the gold medal being given to senior officers and the silver to junior officers and men.

The obverse shows the assault on Fort Cornelis on 26th August 1811. The reverse has inscriptions in English with the date in Roman numerals and JAVA CONQUERED. The rest is in Farsi and can be translated as ‘This medal was conferred in commemoration of the bravery and courage exhibited by the Sepoys of the English Company in the capture of the Kingdom of Java in the year of Hegira 1228’. It was issued unnamed and was typically worn on a yellow cord, as in this case.

The Honourable East India Company (HEIC) began the practice of issuing general campaign medals, as a form of reward to its native Indian troops. From the 1770s onwards these became increasingly common as the company’s power was extended by conquest.
