75 Year of International Football Association Cased Gold Medal

£780.00

A very nice looking and rare Cased 9 carat Gold (375) Medal commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the creation of the International Football Association Board.

The non-portable medal shows a traditional leather football in front of the World globe and ‘1886 -1961 75th ANNIVERSARY’ with a scroll band. Around the outside is: INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION BOARD. The medal comes with its leather on wood fitted case, lined in blue baize and cream silk. The silk has printed in gold: WATCH MAKERS, JEWELLERS & DIAMOND MERCHANTS – Winegartens Ltd – 186-188 Bishopgate LONDON EC2. The reverse of the medal has the hallmarks for the Birmingham Assay Office and the date stamp 1960. It also has the maker’s mark for Winegartens Ltd. Condition is mint on both the medal and box. Given that we haven’t been able to find another example of this medal, we assume that it may only have been made as a present to members of the board.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) is the body that determines the Laws of the Game of association football. IFAB was founded in 1886 to agree standardised Laws for international competition and has since acted as the "guardian" of the internationally used Laws. It is a separate body from FIFA, though FIFA is represented on the board and holds 50% of the voting power. As a legacy of association football's origins in the United Kingdom, the other organisations represented are the governing bodies of the game in the four countries of the UK. Since its establishment in 1904, FIFA, the sport's top governing body, has recognised IFAB's jurisdiction over the Laws.
