Product Description

A very nice, fine condition, ancient Roman silver Denarius coin during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (AD 117-138).

The silver Denarius has on the obverse IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, the laureate bust facing right. On the reverse is PARTH F DIVI NER NEP P M TR P COS / IVSTITIA. Justitia is seated left on throne holding outstretched right hand and vertical sceptre in left.

Hadrian (76 – 138) was a Roman emperor born in Hispania Baetica, into a Roman Italo-Hispanic family that settled in Spain. His father was of senatorial rank and was a first cousin of Emperor Trajan. When Trajan died, his widow claimed that he had nominated Hadrian as emperor immediately before his death. Rome's military and Senate approved Hadrian's succession. He earned disapproval among the elite by abandoning Trajan's expansionist policies and territorial gains in Mesopotamia, Assyria, Armenia, and parts of Dacia. Hadrian preferred to invest in the development of stable, defensible borders and the unification of the empire's disparate peoples. He is known for building Hadrian's Wall, which marked the northern limit of Britannia.
