Product Description

A very nice original Chinese Minghuang Yuying Marriage or Erotic Charm Coin.

The coin shows on one side 4 archaic Chinese characters, while the other side has 4 images of couples mating in varying positions. While sex education was not a topic discussed in ancient China, it was nevertheless important for newlyweds to have a basic understanding. In order to do so, these coin charms, referred to as mixiqian (秘戏钱) meaning ‘secret play’, were given at marriages. The inscription is written in seal script characters and is read in a top down and right to left order. The inscription reads Ming Huang Yu Ying (明皇御影) which translates as "Emperor Ming imperial shadow". The Ming Huang (明皇), in this case, refers to Emperor Xuanzong (685-762 AD), also known as Emperor Ming, of the Tang Dynasty. His concubine Yang Guifei (杨贵妃) was considered one of the Four Beauties of ancient China.

The Tang dynasty ruled China from 618 to 907. It was preceded by the Sui dynasty and followed by the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. Historians generally regard the Tang as a high point in Chinese civilization, and a golden age of cosmopolitan culture. Although the coin refers to the Emperor, it is probably less old being from 1600 to 1800. Condition is good.
