17th Century Franco-Flemish Ivory Crucifix Corpus Christi

A finely carved ivory figure of Christ, dating from the late 17th century.

In the Franco-Flemish style, Christ is nailed to an ebony wood cross, his arms uncomfortably poised and his head leaning to one side. Above, a plaque is inscribed ‘I.N.R.I’ for Ievus Nazarenvs Rex Juadeorvm (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews); beneath, a carved skull and crossbones.

The crucifix has been remounted on a later piece of silk. The carved oak and silvered gesso frame dates from the reign of Louis XIV (1643 - 1715).

The condition of the figure is good, though the smallest finger on Christ’s right hand is damaged. The frame is structurally sound, though the scallop shell at the top has been repaired. The ribbon sections that would have connected the shell to the frame are now incomplete.
