Product Description

An incredible George III period carved bone miniature Commode chair in very fine condition.

The chair is decorated with cut out foliage and a little cupboard, at the back, opens up to display a chamber pot. The chair displays such fine detail in its fretwork, that it is doubtful that this was carved by a Napoleonic prisoner of war. Those, mainly naïve pieces of work, were made to while away the time in captivity and also supplement the diet by trading them with the captors. The person would have been a craftsman, and been given access to some proper tools. Either way it is a superb piece of workmanship, but most likely Chinese or Indo-Persian.

Size: 2.8 x 2.5 x 6.8 cm (1 1/8 x 1 x 2 5/8 inches)
