Product Description

A naively carved bone box, containing a full complete set of dominoes, in good condition.

The dominoes and the box are carved out of ox or mutton bone (Bos taurus or Ovis aries) and was produced by either a Napoleonic or American prisoner of war in the early Nineteenth Century.

The dominoes are unusual, in that they are of set of seven, instead of the more usual 6, or even 9. The 36 pieces fit snugly into the flat sided box, with a sliding lid. The decoration consists of circles and dots some stained in red. The underside of the box is in wood, which has been stained red. There is a faint name written on it, but not legible. Condition is good, but one of the narrow sides of the box has lost a chip of bone.

There were a huge number of prisoners held across Europe at this period and many were allowed to make items that could be sold or bartered, to allow them a better standard of food. Items in straw, bone and wood were the main body of work, since those were the only materials to which the prisoners had access.
