Product Description

A fine quality mahogany barrelled 5 draw marine telescope by William Hawks Grice of London.

He was the optician to King George III. The rare telescope dates from around 1820 and is in very good to near mint condition. It is a magnificently constructed refracting telescope that closes to a very compact size, but opens up to over 4 times its length.

The smallest barrel, by the eyepiece, is engraved ‘Wm Hawks Grice – optician to the King – London’. The brass retains a lot of the original gilding. Hawks Grice is mentioned in the Cyclopaedia of Telescope Makers (Irish Astronomical Journal 1993). His premises were at 3 New Bond Street, London. He seems to have traded for a very short time, buying it from Fraser in 1818 and then selling it to G. & C. Dixey in 1825.

Size retracted: 6.5 x 24.5 cm (2 ½ x 9 5/8 inches)
Size extended: 6.5 x 107.5 cm (2 ½ x 42 ¼ inches)
Weight: 1011 g
