Product Description

A very fine condition cased Victorian bronze and brass Sextant, with an ebony handle.

The sextant is engraved on the scale with the maker’s name: B.R. Hennessy, of Swansea. They were at 5 Wind Street and existed between 1848 till 1875. maker. The sextant is complete with spare viewing lenses and a scale reading magnifier. The sextant is made of a bronze frame with brass swinging arm and gilded bronze lenses. The angled scale on the index arm is clearly legible, going from 0 to 150 degrees.

Apart from the viewer for very bright light, there is another telescopic one. There is a magnifier, framed Vernier, tangent screw and clamp, silvered arc, seven shades and mirrors. The mahogany wooden box is lined inside with dark blue baize. There is a paper label with the details of W.F. Cannon, 175 High Street, Shadwell, London. Whether this is the maker of the box or the retailer is not clear. Both Hennessy and Cannon are registered as Nautical Instrument makers, it is possible that they also bought in. The outside of the box is in very good condition with attractive brass fittings.
