Product Description

A very nice condition example of a c1860 Cased Society of the Arts Compound Microscope in good clean condition.

It was popularized in 1855 when the Society of Arts awarded its prize to Robert Field and was widely copied by others. It stands on an attractive claw footed base. It has a rack and pinion coarse focus, and a fine focus control knob on the side of the barrel that moves a telescoping cross-section extension. Under the square stage is a substage concave mirror on gimbals. All mechanical controls seem to work perfectly. The microscope comes with a single eyepiece and objective lens that yield approximately 100x magnification. The microscope accepts the standard Society thread lens. The microscope is finished gilded brass. The objective has a cylindrical brass case to protect it when not in use. This microscope is in good condition except for some minor scratches to the black steel base. There are no markings on the microscope. The microscope comes with its original mahogany case. There is no key.
