A fine late Victorian Marine Navigator's lattice frame sextant by W.F. Cannon of London, in very nice condition.

The frame, the swinging arm and fittings are made of bronze, with index and horizon glasses, and 7 combination sunshades. There are 2 viewing lenses, one a fair bit longer than the standard telescope. The silver scale arc is made of platinum, over which the vernier and clamp slides. The arc is marked from -5 to 155 degrees. It is also engraved: W.F. Cannon, 175, Shadwell High St, London. To aid reading the calibration, there is microscope on a swinging arm. The handle is made of ebony wood. The sextant comes in a fitted mahogany case. It is internally lined with green baize. Condition is good, but the wood on the outside has suffered a couple of old cracks, but are stable. The brass top escutcheon plate has been replaced. Cannon was a maker of quality sextants in the second half of the 19th century. The sextant was check over and calibrated in 1966 by Lilly & Reynolds Ltd, of 9 Railway Place, London EC3 (0 degrees correction required). The certificate has been mounted on the inside of the case lid.
