Product Description

A rare set of 20 Draftsman’s boxwood Scale Rulers by Stanley of London, housed in a mahogany case, and dating from around 1900.

There are 13 twelve inch rulers and 7 two and a quarter rulers, each with a different scale. Some are scales of imperial measures and others are for particular company machinery, the names being stamped on each one. The condition of the rulers is mostly very good, but a couple have the odd bruise or nibble. We have not been able to find online another set as complete as this. The case has a brass oval plaque, which has not been engraved.

William Ford Stanley (1829-1909) founded his firm in 1853, making drawing and surveying instruments and in 1866 published the first edition of his Treatise on Drawing Instruments. This became the standard work on the subject and eight editions were produced up to 1925. The head office and works were latterly at Avery Hill Road, New Eltham, London SE9. They became part of the Sime Darby Group c1977 and were finally liquidated in 1999.
