A large Bronze Royal Navy Ship or R.N. Establishment Naval Crown that would be attached to a wall or bulkhead, immediately above the Ship or Establishment’s Crest. This crest has been painted and is in very nice condition, although the paint is weathered, but intact, and the bronze seems to have a galvanic primer, applied.
The Naval crown differs from the Royal crown in that it is made up a central old sailing ship stern, with a ship’s mast and sail on either side, and finished with half a ship’s stern, in order to give a 3D perspective of a circle. The base of the frown has precious jewels inset in red, green and blue. It has been used by the navy since about 1700. One of the earliest examples of the naval crown in its present form, appears above the Arms of Greenwich Hospital, this dates from dating about 1700. In this case the decoration however, is wholly of square sails without the interspersed sterns. Above the sails are pennant flags that used to fly in the same direction (ie left to right), like in this case, but which were altered in 1970 to fly opposite, symmetrically.
The reverse shows 2 threaded bolt holes for attachment.
