Product Description

A mint condition leather cased Abney Level Clinometer made by the renowned instrument manufacturer Stanley of London.

It most likely dates from around 1940-1950. It consists of a small telescope eyesight and an adjustable tubular spirit level, which is connected to a semi circular protractor scale and vernier, marked in both slope and degrees up to ±90°. A magnifier glass assists in accurate reading of the degree of inclination from the vernier. The Abney (hand spirit) Level or Clinometer, allows the object to be sighted and the level bubble can then be seen simultaneously, so that the index can be set accurately. The main body is made from black painted brass, with a stainless steel protractor. It is marked STANLEY, LONDON. MADE IN ENGLAND. The military style case is made of leather with carrying straps. A former owner’s details have been written on the side.
