Product Description

A very nice quality British cased 7 inch (18 cm) Celestial or Star Globe in fine condition.

The globe is made by the renowned instrument makers, Kelvin and Hughes Ltd, of London, circa 1988. The globe has the star charts (including constellations) printed on cream paper, that has been applied in sections to the globe and then lacquered. It also includes the solstitial circle divided for the annual calendar, the equinoctial graduated in degrees, the northern hemisphere with key for star Magnitude, above an oval label, which reads: STAR GLOBE, KELVIN & HUGHES LTD., EPOCH 1975. The paper is printed by George Philip & Son. Ltd. The globe is pivoted between the poles within a lacquered brass meridian circle divided in degrees and resting on a similarly divided horizon ring. The latter ring is annotated with the principal compass cardinal points and inscribed 0552-6605-99-463-6623 and 8804/JLG/6/88.

These are the Nato Stock and Model numbers, 88 being the year of manufacture. There are also 2 further outer bronze half rings, each graduated in degrees. On the underside of lid is a small rack that holds 4 pointers (1 damaged). There is also an INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE label pasted to inside of lid.

Such globes were supplied/issued to mariners to assist with night time navigation by providing a reference for the relative position of the celestial bodies. The firm of Kelvin and Hughes was formed in 1947 with the merger of Henry Hughes and Son Limited of London with Kelvin, Bottomley and Baird Limited of Glasgow.
