Product Description

A very well made and original looking 19th Century Victorian copy of a c1400 Houndskull Bascinet Helmet.

This is the archetypal helmet worn by Knights during the Middle Ages, being the most common form during the 13th and 14th Centuries. Originally developed to be worn under the great helm or barrel helm, the bascinet eventually evolved to include a retractable visor, like in this case. The original purpose was to protect the warrior during hand-to-hand combat, but allowing him to discard his heavy, hot, suffocating great helm.

This example replicates a later evolution, probably from the early 14th Century. The additional visor made the helmet more versatile, for both lance and hand to hand combat. The helmet skull is a one-piece construction in steel, with a separate retractable pointed visor. The visor can be removed by removing the pins from a hinge assembly on both sides. There are 2 slits for the eyes and ventilation holes on either side of the face. There are more ventilation holes on the right side than the left. The edges have been embellished with bands of brass.

The helm has suffered over time, as it was probably kept in a humid atmosphere. Although the brass has weathered well, the steel, whilst still intact, is very thin in parts. The previous owner has not helped by polishing the tarnished brass with too abrasive a product, causing scratches and bright brass areas. This will eventually dull. The inside is rusty and has been treated with oil to stabilise the steel. All the fittings and holes are irregular showing that helmet has been constructed in traditional manner, without the regularity of modern tooling.
