Product Description

A very well made and original looking 19th Century Victorian copy of a c1200 Great Helm.

This is the archetypal helmet worn by the crusaders during the Middle Ages. The helmet is a multi-piece construction with a steel body held in place by brass bands, forming a cross floury on the front face. There is a long slit for the eyes and ventilation holes on either side of the face. A wavy top crown finishes it off.

The helm has suffered over time, as it was probably kept in a humid atmosphere. Although the brass has weathered well, the steel, whilst still intact, is very thin in parts. The previous owner has not helped by polishing the tarnished brass with too abrasive a product, causing scratches and bright brass areas. This will eventually dull. The inside is rusty and has been treated with oil to stabilise the steel. All the fittings and holes are irregular showing that helmet has been constructed in traditional manner, without the regularity of modern tooling.
