Product Description

This is an early example of an American Art metal jewellery box dating from around 1910.

It is lined with chinese silk and is decorated with a floral design on the metal work, which was popular around the 1910-1920 period. It stands on filigree engraved legs in a casket style. It shows no makers marks.

Jewellery boxes have long been treasured, sometimes valuable in themselves, sometimes valuable for their memories. Throughout history, jewellery boxes had been constructed and designed by craftsmen, one box at a time, each a unique piece reflecting the style of the time and locale. Jewellery boxes, also called 'caskets' were extremely popular, ranging from the smallest ring box to the large boxes, all beautifully crafted. They were often made of cast metal, first plated with copper, then with silver or gold as fashion dictated. They were lined with fine pale-colored silks from Japan and China, printed faille and satin/sateen, and were often trimmed with a fine twisted silk cording.
