Product Description

A very fine, late 1600s or early 1700s Dutch brass tobacco box or case, decorated with wrought engraved love scenes.

The scenes are quite puritanical in nature. One side depicts an outdoor scene with a large heart between a man and a woman, both dressed in the sobre clothes of the period. The heart is pierced by two arrows, signifying the mutual love and the writing reads, 'Lief is mijn hert' (In old Dutch it is 'Dear is my heart'). On the other side, things have progressed somewhat and the man is giving a ring to the woman. Underneath the image is written 'Mijn trou Ontfangt' (In old Dutch, this reads as 'My faith is entrusted').

The inside has the number XII scratched on the top and bottom and likely refers to the maker's batch number as the roman numerals are seen on other examples. The case is in very good condition. The thichness of the brass is sufficient to protect it from knocks, but it has not been overly polished. The hinges are well made and the case retains a tight seal.

These boxes were popular, given that the Dutch were the main traders of tobacco at the time. The cases were sometimes made in Germany and engraved in Holland. A very collectable item.
