Product Description

A nice example of an early 19th Century Georgian lead tobacco jar in good condition.

The jar is octagonal in shape and appears at some time to have been painted, with remnants of paint still present. The finial on the lid is the head of an African man, indicating that the tobacco jar has a link to the slavery in the tobacco plantations in the American colonies. The sides of the lead box are plain. There is an inside part lid to pat the tobacco down. Lead tobacco jars were first introduced in the 1750s and remained popular until the 1900s.

Size: 12 x 10 x 13 cm (4 ¾ x 4 x 5 1/8 inches)
