Product Description

A unique brass Bell Steam Whistle that belonged to the Steam Roller ‘Old Meg’ and which has been mounted on a wooden base and presented to its driver on his retirement.

The Steam Roller was built around 1899 by John Fowler & Co. Ltd, Engineers of Leathley Road, Hunslet, Leeds, West Yorkshire. They produced traction engines and ploughing implements and equipment, as well as railway equipment. Fowler also produced the British Railways Engineering Department locomotives ED1 to ED7.

The Bell Steam Whistle is in very good condition and has been mounted on a circular teak base. It has been engraved: Old Meg – FOWLER STEAM ROLLER – No.8273 – DRIVER W. R. SCOTT – FONT SIDE – MITFORD – MORPETH.

According to his grandson, who sold us the piece, the Steam Roller was still working in the 1960s and was involved in the construction of part of the M1 motorway. In the winter, they were fitted with snow ploughs to clear the snow.
