An original 1937 King George VI Coronation Stool in good condition.
The 4 chamfered square legged stool is made of dark limed oak with the concave moulded seat covered in a blue velvet trimmed with gold braid. The velvet has some staining. The underside of the seat has a hot iron branded GVI CORONATION and is stamped with the maker’s label W. & A. CHAPMAN Ltd – 20/26 North St. Taunton – MARRIOTT – 14919.
The coronation of King George VI was held on the 12th May 1937. Queen Mary took great interest in the design of the furniture for the ceremony and ensured it had a traditional feel, in keeping with previous coronation ceremonies. The event was one of the first large outside broadcasts to be filmed as an outside broadcast, for the nascent BBC Television. There were several makers of the stools and guests were given the option of buying their stool after the ceremony.
