Product Description

A fine looking antique late 18th – early 19th century Islamic Indo-Persian large leather shield in good condition.

The Dhal or shield is of circular convex form, made of unpainted buffalo hide. The centre is set with four domed brass bosses, with flower shape that connect through the leather to four ring-bolts for straps to hold the shield. Generally, there is a padded cushion on the inside, but this example does not have one. The outside of the shield has been decorated with gilded painted decoration, which has oxidised to a coppery colour.

The Dhal is a type of buckler originating in the Indian subcontinent which is nearly always round and varies in diameter from about eight inches (20 cm) to twenty-four inches (60 cm). Some are nearly flat while others are strongly convex or curved. The edges may be flat or rolled back in the reverse direction to that of the curvature of the shield. They are made from animal hide or occasionally steel. The hide shields are decorated with gilding and painting and sometimes lacquered. The bosses are always ornamental.
