c1800 Marriott Blue & White Porcelain Portable Toilet

A fine looking and rare example of a c1800 Georgian portable Lavatory, Toilet or Water Closet, decorated in Chinese style blue and white transfer, with the Georgian Royal Coat of Arms.

The Toilet consists of a black painted tinned steel drum bucket on top of which slots a metal cylinder containing the blue and white porcelain bowl. The cream insert at the bottom of the bucket has an impact crack but is stable. The bowl is decorated with cartouches, flowers and a large shield: MARRIOTT PATENTEE – 26 LUDGATE HILL and 89 FLEET St. LONDON’. The cylinder has a mechanism, with a plunger, which pulls up the hole cover, in order to hide the contents. The hole cover is made of white enamelled metal, and has the Royal Coat of Arms with: ‘BY HIS MAJESTY’S ROYAL LETTERS PATENT – PORTABLE WATER CLOSETS’. Over the top of the bowl fits a mahogany circular seat.

Condition is very good, considering the age of piece.
