c1850 German Neusatzwerk Factory Painted Snuff Box

A very attractive mid-19th century German Snuff or Pill Box, with a hand painted on porcelain lid panel, representing what is either a steelworks or paper mill.

It shows a large complex of buildings with 5 tall chimneys. On the reverse of the porcelain panel, inside the lid, is written Neusatzwerk. The oval body of the box is made of gilded brass, with the base made of layered agate. The condition is good, with just a few very small scratches to the painting and a small bruise to the agate.

Neusatzwerk will refer to a factory in (or by) the town of Neusatz. There are several, mainly in Germany and in what is now Serbia (Novi Sad).
