Product Description

An unusual north-east Caucasian double niche rug, dating from the 3rd quarter of the 19th century.

The primary border is of stylised dragon swastikas, sometimes referred to as ‘Poinsettia’. The secondary borders on either side are made up of four petal carnations. A band of ‘Z’ rosettes comprises the rug’s innermost border. Predominantly of madder red, the field of the rug is decorated with 8-pointed stars and nomadic Anatolian motifs. Around the central hexagonal medallion are Bactrian camels being led by herdsman. The rug has some similarities to the ‘Turkish Village Rugs’ made in the borderlands between the Caucasus and Eastern Anatolia.

Certain areas of the dark brown field, appear to have been woven in a different wool, as evidenced by the lighter band of wool on the far side of the rug. Though we cannot be certain, we believe this is a consequence of the weaver’s inexperience and has come about through an effort to finish these remaining areas in undyed brown sheep’s wool.

Areas of the rug that originally would have been dyed with indigo have faded with time, leaving a grey colour, with a faint lilac hue. Remnants of indigo dye can be seen from the reverse of the rug. As is often the case, the dark brown background has corroded over time, shortening the length of pile.

Unlike the latticed one directional prayer rugs of Dagestan, the rug is double niche and bi-directional. In many ways, it has clear similarities to the ‘Kazak’ rugs woven by the Azeris, the Turkic nomads living between Derbent in southern Dagestan, across Azerbaijan, to the borders of Armenia and the shores of lake Sewan.
