Product Description

A really attractive looking late Victorian metal Travelling Trunk, with an effective painted crocodile leather effect to steel and with an ornate brass lock and fittings.

It is in surprisingly good condition, with all its original interior dark red paint. There are several paper labels with the details of the maker Jones Brothers & Co. of Wolverhampton, and a small brass plaque on the base. On the outside, both the lock and an oval plaque are in brass, with the company details and logo of 2 hands. The floor trunk has small rounded studs on the top to protect the paintwork of the trunk, when others were stacked on top. There are also wood rails or bandings to protect the underside when on the floor. The trunk comes with its metal key, also displaying the Jones Bros name and logo. This example is so attractive, that it is much more than a storage chest, and could be used as a coffee table bedside trunk, etc.

According to the Jones Brothers & Co. history, they began around 1871 producing travelling trunks out of sheet iron and then steel. The company had experience of tinning and japanning, from previous wares. Before that time, travelling trunks were usually made of wood, covered with black canvas and studded with brass-headed nails. Travel, both within the country and abroad, was greatly increasing in the latter half of the nineteenth century and this created an enormous trade in trunks. Many Wolverhampton firms joined in this trade and no doubt Jones Brothers profited greatly by it.
