Product Description

A very attractively and finely woven picture of the Lifeboatwoman Grace Darling, by the Stevengraph Works Coventry.

This shows a marine scene of the lighthouse keeper’s daughter Grace Darling rowing her open boat, in very heavy seas, to the rescue of persons shipwrecked within sight of her father's Farne Island lighthouse in 1838. This version was registered in 1893. Underneath the image is written in ink on the mount: WOVEN IN PURE and Grace Darling. The Stevengraph has been mounted, framed and glazed. The reverse shows the other side of the Stevengraph with a picture of the factory and a list of other titles.

In the late 1800's, the silk ribbon weavers of Coventry, England, were experiencing very difficult trading conditions due to changing fashions and cheap imports from abroad. Several weavers had already diversified into related activities, and Thomas Stevens was one of these, with his Stevengraphs.
