Product Description

A wonderful, original rare example of a beautiful antique GPO Candlestick telephone, in very nice condition.

We have not come across another example as early as this, and the one in the Science Museum in London is 1929. The 100 series, 'candlestick' two-piece telephone is, therefore, a highly collectable item. This one is an original tele No. 2 dating from 1919 and in good original condition, with age & wear one would expect for its period. It was converted to a type 150 in the late 1920s.

The bell receiver was originally coated in a black vulcanised rubber (Vulcanite) and the remaining brass work has a black oxide finish. The dial button is original in black oxide on copper, which was without any dial and relied entirely upon connection via the operator. The manufacturing ensured that this transmitter would continue to be used for many years to come & easily replaced when required. In contrast, the twin coil and diaphragm receiver was of very good quality, indeed. The Tele. 150, like its successor the Tele. 162, was actually only the 'front end' of the telephone. Containing only the transmitter, receiver and switch hook assembly; the entire electrical telephone circuitry was contained within an accompanying magneto bell set. This example has the original wooden cased version and is a wall bellset no 1 which is the correct bellset for this model.
