Product Description

A very nice early Rolls-Royce ‘Spirit of Ecstasy’ Car Mascot in good condition that has been mounted on a black turned wood base.

It dates from around 1920, but could be earlier as the figure is made of German Silver, which was a feature of the early examples. It has been extensively lovingly polished with age and some of the features, such as the hands have all but disappeared. Given the wear, it probably started life mounted on a car, being transferred to a desk ornament later on. It is stamped around the base ROLLS-ROYCE and REG … PAT … , the detail of the latter is not legible. It may be a period copy, of which there were many, although there is also a wide range of types and appearance to the original examples.

The mascot would have originally fitted the majority of Rolls Royce models. In 1911 it became fashionable to put a mascot on the radiator of your car. Royce wanted a mascot befitting the style of the ‘Best Car’ and commissioned the renowned artist Charles Sykes to design a suitable. The result was the ‘Spirit of Ecstasy’ (sometimes known as the Flying Lady). Its design was patented on the 6th February, 1911. The model is thought to have been Eleanor Thornton, secretary and lover of Lord Montague, and became the approved mascot.
