Product Description

A rare piece of American breweriana. A metal advertising tray for the George J. Renner Brewing Co., with images of their most famous beers: Grossvater and Zepp.

The rectangular tray is in good condition, with some staining, but little rust. It is cream coloured, with a gold border. Between the 2 bottles of beer is the logo of the company. The maker’s details are in the border, at the bottom: The Novelty Advertising Co., Cosnocton, Ohio. The reverse is black. Despite their worrying names, the beers were popular. Grossvater (Grandfather in German) was first produced in 1912. When Prohibition was introduced in the USA, in 1920, Renner brought out Zepp (name was based on Zeppelin and used the airship in their branding), which was a non-alcoholic beer. As a result of this, the company was able to survive the Prohibition years.
