Product Description

A rare and beautiful ornament, this is an early to mid-20th century Indo Persian Large Silver mounted Polished Turban (or Turbo) Sea Snail, that has been made into a gourde or receptacle, worn on a length of chain.

It is most likely made in India and the silver is decorated with an array of Buddhist or Hindu Ashtamangala Auspicious Symbols. The silver has been fashioned into a collar and hinged lid of the shell. The shell is that of a large sea snail called Great Green Turban (Turbo marmoratus), which has been polished to reveal the beautiful mother of pearl underneath. The condition is extremely good.

The main Ashtamangala mainly represented are the 2 golden fish (Guarmatsya) which symbolise the auspiciousness of all sentient beings in a state of fearlessness without danger of drowning in Saṃsāra. The two fishes originally represented the two main sacred rivers of India - the Ganges and Yamuna. They have religious significance in Hindu, Jain and Buddhist traditions. In Buddhism, the fish symbolize happiness as they have complete freedom of movement in the water. They represent fertility and abundance. Often drawn in the form of carp, which are regarded in the Orient as sacred on account of their elegant beauty, size, and lifespan.
