Product Description

A rare and unusual looking c1931 Promotional Parasol or umbrella, that has the Gramophone Company’s ‘His Master’s Voice’ dog Nipper the EMI record emblems on the canvas panels.

The parasol or umbrella has a spade handle in plywood and wooden cane. The sand colour canvas has the applied logos in brown. Condition is good. The tip of the cane has been chipped and one of the 8 early plastic rod stay holders is missing. The parasol retains its shape well.

We are dating the parasol from the construction materials used to the 1930s. The Gramophone Company and Columbia Gramophone Company had both existed for some time, but were forced by the economic hit of the Great Depression to merge in 1931 (hence the possible promotional reason of the parasol), becoming the Electric and Musical Industries (EMI). His Master's Voice (HMV) was the unofficial name of the label created in 1901 by The Gramophone Co. Ltd. The phrase was first coined in the late 1890s as the title of a painting depicting a terrier-mix dog named Nipper listening to a wind-up disc gramophone.

We have been searching online to try and find another example of this HMV/EMI parasol, without any luck. We assume only a very small amount were made.
