Product Description

A highly unusual bronze torpedo submarine clock, in the French Industrial style, dating from the beginning of the twentieth century.

On a base of polished slate, the clock stands on two modernist wishbone mounts. The torpedo case is of heavy bronze, held together by garish bolts. The propeller moves freely, but has no connection to the interior movement. Of porcelain with Roman numerals, the face has an attractive Art Nouveau bronze centre dial, like those used by Gustave Becker. The glass over the face, opens like a porthole.

Though sharing similarities to the Modernism of the first half of the twentieth century, the French industrial style came earlier and felt little need to abide by the geometric cleanliness of later fashions. Instead it lived alone, predicting what outlandish contraptions awaited the world as it entered the modern age. This clock appears to be inspired by the ‘Nautilus’ submarine, from Jules Verne’s novel of 1870, ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.’

The clock is good working order and keeps time accurately. The condition is very good, though the hatch covering the movement looks to have been repaired at some point.
