Product Description

A finely-detailed ormolu relief portrait of Charles Dickens, mounted on a velvet background and framed.

Ormolu, or gilded bronze, is an old technique where a mixture of high-carat gold and mercury is applied to a bronze base. The process grew in popularity during the age of Napoleon, forming an important part of the French Imperial Style. The technique was later phased out, as health risks from repeated exposure to mercury meant that gilders were lucky to live past forty.

The condition is very good, though the gilding has dampened over time. The maple veneer frame is in an excellent state.
