A beautiful pair of 1760-1761 French, early Louis XVI Jurande Silver (958) circular shaped Table Salts (salt cellars), with blue glass inserts, that has later been imported to Britain and re-hallmarked in London as Sterling silver (925) in 1783.
The Salt cellars are in fine condition, with thick gauge silver in an elegant simple undecorated body, apart from the beaded top edge and standing on 3 stylised feet. The Salts have inset circular blue glass bowls in perfect condition. Both the top and bottom of the silver bowls have French and British silver hallmarks. The silver content is 958, which is superior to Sterling and is referred to in Britain as Britannia silver. The French marks include the Maison Commune de Paris and the Jurande, a guarantee it’s taxes were paid at origin and the assay guarantee. The maker’s mark is not clear enough to make out. The British hallmarks are by the London Assay office, with the date mark of 1783. The maker’s mark is that of James Jackson & Son, of Norman Street, St Luke's, London. There is no damage or corrosion and minimal wear.
Size each: 7 x 4 cm (2 ¾ x 1 ½ inches)
Weight: 140 g
