1871 Victorian Cornish Needlework Sampler

A nice example of a Victorian girl’s Needlework Sampler in good, if slightly faded condition.

It is the work of Esther Thomas Maddern, aged 12, and is dated 1871. There are the usual alphabets in different fonts as well as the 10 digits. There are also flower sprays decoration and the following lines: ‘Like as the hart desireth the water-brooks; so longeth my soul after thee O God’. This is from Words Psalm 42 vv. 1–3. The sampler has been mounted, framed and glazed.

Esther Thomas Maddern was born in 1859 in Morvah, near Boscastle, in North Cornwall. She was one of twins. She married in 1884, aged 24 to Edward Stevens Williams, a Miner from Boscastle. The 1891 Census has her still living at home with her widowed mother and 3 brothers. She has one son named James, but there is no mention of her husband. She died in 1935.
