Product Description

A very rare example of a display copy of a 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games Silver Winner’s Medal.

The medal is a replica of the official issue and appears to have been made in Germany. The medal is made of zinc, which was most likely silver plated. Zinc eats the silver over time, leaving the grey metal look. The medal shows Zeus, sitting in a chair of ancient form, and holding a figure of the Goddess of Victory in his hand. It has OLYMISKA SPELEN STOCKHOLM 1912 around the edge. In the background can be seen the outlines of buildings of Stockholm. It is not the similar commemorative non portable medal that was made, which features the same Zeus, but with the Royal Palace of Stockholm, together with those of Helgeandsholmen Island and of the façade of the Riksdag House.

The medal reverse is plain and is suspended for wear on a white silken ribbon, with the Olympic colours (blue, yellow, black, green and red) running through it. There is separate suspension clasp in silvered metal on which is written ERFOLGREICHER VOLKSSPORTLER. This is in German, not Swedish and translates as ‘Succesful Sportsman’.

The significance of this piece is unclear. Research has shown one other example, which lacked its ribbon and suspension clasp. The origin of that one was not known. We believe that the kudos of the medal holder was replicated in the hometown or sporting college, and a few replicas must have been made.
