£160.00

A very nice looking c1945 British Straw Boater Hat that was adorned with a Hat Band featuring US Flags for the visit of President Harry Truman to Plymouth in order to meet King George VI.
The Straw Boater is a quality hat, made by I. Britton Hatmakers (inside label), of Kingsbridge in Devon and is made of stiff sennit straw and has a traditional black hat band, over which a larger linen/cotton hat band has been wrapped. It is ink printed with United States of America flags, where the design makes it appear that they have been folded over each other. The band has a selvedge border with a stiffening wire and is held in place by a small pin. Head size is 7 inches (56 cm).
On the 2nd August 1945, The US president came to Plymouth, Devon, England, to informally meet with King George VI. It is assumed that the straw boater was worn by a member of the welcoming committee.
Harry S. Truman (1884-1972) was the 33rd president of the United States, serving from 1945 to 1953. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as a United States senator from Missouri from 1935 to 1945 and briefly as the 34th vice president in 1945 under Franklin D. Roosevelt. Assuming the presidency after Roosevelt's death, Truman implemented the Marshall Plan to rebuild the economy of Western Europe and established both the Truman Doctrine and NATO to contain the expansion of Soviet communism. He proposed numerous liberal domestic reforms, but few were enacted by the conservative coalition that dominated the Congress.
