Product Description

A highly unusual and rare Soviet Russian puppet theatre poster, designed by the illustrator Valentin Andrievich and printed in 1956

Andrievich, Valentin Valentinovich (1908-1985) was an illustrator and cartoonist of the Soviet era. Little is known of his life, though he designed numerous posters for the ‘Obraztsov’ Puppet Theatre in Moscow.

The poster advertises the play “Under the rustle of your eyelashes” (Под шорох твоих ресниц), which premiered on the 12th April 1949. In its twenty-year history, the play was performed almost 2000 times and at the height of its popularity caused queues from the ticket office to the station platform of Mayakovskaya metro station. Directed by Sergey Obraztsov, it parodied the theatrical excesses of Hollywood.

The State Puppet Theatre was named after the influential Russian puppeteer
Sergey Obraztsov (1901-1992), who is credited with establishing puppetry as an art form on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

The condition of the poster is good, though there are two minor tears: one towards the bottom left and another in the top right corner.

Size: 82.5 x 54.5cm
