Product Description

A very nice original example of an antique Imperial Russian Orthodox bronze Crucifix or Blessing Cross.

The cross has the traditional Orthodox shape, being like a cross of Lorraine with an added slanted cross member, below Jesus’ feet. This is referred to as the most “complete” Crucifix, with the so-called eight-pointed cross, which shows Christ crucified. Note that Jesus is not shown wearing a crown of thorns, but a halo of glory. He is not shown in agony and suffering, but peacefully reposed. As is often the case in icons, the Slavonic inscriptions on the cross have been shortened, with single or pairs of letters signifying words. Above the head of Christ is the І.Н.Ц.І. for ‘Jesus King of the Jews’. On either side of the arms of the cross are the letters IC and XC, for Jesus Christ. Also present below the feet of Christ are four letters: М.Л.Р.Б., meaning: The place of the skull, where Adam was. Further down, by the skull is Г Г standing for Mount Golgotha. The cross is finely cast and has a toned patina of age. On the reverse is another paragraph of text.

The cross has had a hole drilled, at some time, in order to nail it to the wall or altar. Condition is very good.
