Product Description

A fine miniature painting of the infamous Bourbon Queen Marie Antoinette.

In the picture Marie Antoinette wears her hair in a ‘pouffe’, with a string of pearls hanging around her fringe. The stylised diamond necklace is perhaps an allusion to the ‘Diamond Necklace Affair’, where rumours about her buying a diamond necklace for 2 million livres circulated. Though the affair was a hoax, it gained a symbolic significance and perpetuated perceptions of the Queen living in decadence, whilst France wavered on the brink of financial ruin and revolution.

We believe the frame dates from the 1860’s, where a revival in the Louis XVI style lead to interest in the Bourbon monarchy across Europe. The painting is earlier, possibly from the 18th Century where techniques in painting on ivory were being refined.

The frame has elements of both the Bourbon coat of arms and the cypher of Marie Antoinette: ‘the two angels meeting in the middle’, the scrolling patterns and domed crown. The marks are barely legible, though the ‘800’ silver mark can be made out.
