Product Description

A finely painted Tibetan Thangka of Padmasambhava, dating from the early to mid 19th century.

The Thangka depicts Padmasambhava, holding his Khatavanga staff, whilst surrounded by a dark mountainous landscape.

Often referred to as the 2nd Buddha, Padmasambhava was an 8th century Indian sage who is credited with Tibet’s final conversion to the Vajrayana form of Buddhism. It is believed that he travelled to Tibet from Afghanistan in the year 747 AD.

The Thangka is of the usual construction, with painted linen surrounded by ornate brocaded silk. The back of the linen is painted with the flaming sword of wisdom (Manjushri).

The condition is very good, though the paint shows wear around the creases.
