Product Description

An unusual and decorative c1880 (but possibly a fair bit older) sculptured high relief terracotta panel representing the trial scene in William Shakespeare’s the Merchant of Venice.

The rectangular plaque is made and coloured to resemble ivory or age toned marble. It shows Antonio and Nerissa in front of the Duke, with Shylock to the right. The court is in Venice because the Duke’s seat has the winged Lion of Venice emblem on the backrest. The plaque has been mounted, glazed and framed. Condition is good, although the plaque has suffered a crack in the past and been repaired. The period frame has a bit of damage to the edge beading and veneer. There are no maker’s details that we can see. We assume it is English because another example we have shows the arrest of Lord Essex in Elizabeth I’s court.

Size plaque: 18 x 29 cm (7 1/8 x 11 ½ inches)
Size frame: 28 x 39.5 x 4 cm (11 x 15 ½ x 1 ½ inches)
Weight: 1700 g
