Product Description

A very rare and desirable original North American tribal mask amulet belonging to the Tlingit, the indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest Coast, in an area that is in both Canada and Alaska (USA).

The mask, which is carved out of a long-bone section of a whale, is more a representation of a face and not designed to be worn on the face. For that reason, there are no cut-outs for the eyes or mouth. The mask is suspended around the neck by a necklace of shell pieces, sanded into tubes, through which a cord is threaded.

The whale bone shows evidence of age, but does not appear to be a washed up piece, which would make it a lot more porous. Even in museums, we have not been able to find an example which has the necklace, and certainly no others for sale.

The mask was found in an auction job lot of early 20th Century fine quality tribal artifacts from all over the World. As such, we are dating it to around 1900.

Size mask: 14 x 15.5 x 5.5 cm (5 ½ x 6 1/8 x 2 1/8 inches)
Length necklace: 68 cm (26 ¾ inches)
Weight: 573 g
