Product Description

A really nice original late 19th Century (possibly earlier) Tibetan Buddhist carved wooden and polychromed mask, in good condition.

The mask represents a Demon with a fearsome face and a crown of skulls. The mask is painted in blue, rust red, gold, white, green and black. The colours have become subdued with age and patina, but where the paint has been scuffed or chipped, show vibrant colours. The dark blue, in particular, becomes a vivid Lapis Lazuli, exposing the origin of the pigment.

The Demon is Mara, which tempted Guatama Buddha with seductive visions of beautiful young women, supposedly his daughters. As he is associated with death, rebirth and desire, he is considered the antagonist of ‘Enlightenment’.

The mask is in good condition, considering its age, and was part of a job lot of fine carvings and masks. Apart from scuffed paint, there is a canine tooth missing and a couple of stress cracks. The reverse has the remnants of the straps. There is also a catalogue wax seal, with a part Hindu number 041.
