Product Description

A nice example of an antique c1900 Tibetan Mazer Bowl in very good condition.

The Mazer is carved out of a bowl-shaped piece of burr maple wood that has been clad on the inside surface, with a gilded silver skin and a silver collar on the foot base. The collar is decorated with a frieze of geometric shapes. The wood has a lovely mottled and striped grain, with a deep caramel colour, with nice patination.

Mazers were a traditional drinking vessel used by Tibetan monks in monasteries. However, the Mazer Bowl has a much larger sphere of use, going from medieval England all the way to Eastern Asia. In Europe it is a small wooden drinking vessel, with various types of silver decoration around the inside and outside. It was originally designed for drinking in one cupped hand.
