Product Description

A nice original c1950 to 1960 African Ivory Coast Dan Mask.

The mask is sculpted out of wood and has been polychromed in black, white and red brown pigment. It has been finished off with a surrounding of intricate coiled woven rope work, as hair. Underneath the chin is a strip of animal hide with coarse dark hair. This Beautiful Dan mask represents a happy mocking character or Du spirit. The mouth is open showing a toothy smile and with the tongue sticking out. The globular eyes are barely open, with horizontal slits for the wearer to see through. The condition of the mask is very good. The mask displays the wear and patina of age. Other than a light brush, the mask has not been cleaned or polished.

Dan sculptors mainly produce masks which deal with virtually every element in Dan society, including education, competition, war, peace, social regulation and entertainment. The Dan People, also known as the Yacuba, are from the area bordering either side of the Ivory Coast and Liberia. Most of their masks are for the secret ceremonies and protective rituals. They believe that the world is animated by a force called Du (spirit soul) and that this force is manifested as invisible spirits which take human or animal form and who channel communication with the high God Zlan or Xra. These spirits may be perceived via the carvings of the mask. Worldwide in drama and dance, masks are worn to enhance the story and to clarify the emotions being expressed. Always, masks intensify and heighten the experience, whatever the intention of the wearer of the mask is.

It is part of a collection collected by a French Diplomat based in Africa and purchased from his retirement home in Brittany, France.
