Product Description

A nice original c1950 to 1960 African Ivory Coast Dan mask.

It is characterised by round eyes, an oval shape, a smooth forehead, and a mouth slightly open. It has been carved out of wood and decorated by a mane of rolled woven cloth, with added cowrie shells. Small cushions of red cloth have been added along the top to increase the impressive effect. However, the main characteristic is a large crest of chicken and Guinea fowl feathers, that sit on top of the head, indicating the importance of the wearer. Condition is good, but the mask does show evidence of age, with a good overall patina. We have only given it a light brush, in order to maintain its originality.

Dan sculptors mainly produce masks which deal with virtually every element in Dan society, including education, competition, war, peace, social regulation and entertainment. The Dan People, also known as the Yacuba, have the reputation of being fierce warriors always battling their neighbours, are from the area bordering either side of the Ivory Coast and Liberia. Most of their masks are for the secret ceremonies and protective rituals. They believe that the world is animated by a force called Du (spirit soul) and that this force is manifested as invisible spirits which take human or animal form and who channel communication with the high God Zlan or Xra. These spirits may be perceived via the carvings of the mask. Worldwide in drama and dance, masks are worn to enhance the story and to clarify the emotions being expressed. Always, masks intensify and heighten the experience, whatever the intention of the wearer of the mask is.

It is part of a collection collected by a French Diplomat based in Africa and purchased from his retirement home in Brittany, France.
